Epilepsy Epilepsy Basics

Placing a spoon in the mouth of someone having a seizure is the wrong thing to do

When someone is having an epileptic seizure, they may lose consciousness, fall to the ground, twitch or convulse. One misconception about helping a person having this type of a seizure is that you should place an object in their mouth to prevent them from biting or swallowing their tongue. Experts suggest not putting anything in their mouth, as it is not likely that they will swallow their tongue. If you see someone having a seizure turn the person on their side and clear away nearby objects, so that they do not inadvertently hurt themselves.
